About

Hello and welcome to my minimalist website! My name is Ángel López Oriona and I am from Cedeira, a small and beautiful town located in northern Spain 🇪🇸.

In my late teens, I worked as a full time online poker player specialised in 6-max Sit & Go’s. The result of my poker career was a net worth of approximately $60,000 (a lot for a teenager…), which were mainly spent on parties, restaurants and unnecessary stuff (I learnt a lot from these mistakes! 😬). Then, I started to get serious about my education. In this regard, I received my bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and my master’s degree in Statistics both from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), and my master’s degree in Big Data Analytics from the European University of Madrid (Spain). Moreover, at age 28, I received my PhD in Statistics from the University of A Coruña (Spain). So, now, I can assure you that getting a PhD is way easier than playing winning poker (and that is why you can make more money at the poker table than in academia, although I enjoy academia more!).

During my period as a PhD Candidate, I have been a visiting researcher in several international universities in countries like Australia 🇦🇺, Germany 🇩🇪, Italy 🇮🇹 or the United Kingdom 🇬🇧. This was possible thanks to the support of my former research group MODES and the CITIC research center of the University of A Coruña, which provided most of the funding. Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Researcher who enjoys his academic activity more than ever. My new home is the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), located in the wonderful Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦.

I also love travelling to every place I can and learning about its history, culture and people. Until now, I have visited 33 different countries and hope that this number increases substantially during next years. Usually, I travel with only a small bag 🎒 and my mobile phone 📱, which are more than enough to visit every corner of the world.
